Facebook: Private Sharing

by Ron on September 15, 2009

We’ve written about sharing a link or video with your entire network in Using the Share Feature to Add Stuff to Your Profile, but did you know you can use the same feature to share links privately with just a one or a few friends. The Sharing Feature actually includes a private sharing option, but it’s fairly easy to miss it.

Suppose you have a music video, you know your old college roommate would love, but might not interest the rest of your network. You can share it privately as follows:

You can share a link privately by clicking the Send as Email link.

  1. Click the Share link and the Share dialog box opens.
  2. Click the Send as Message Instead link and a Facebook email form opens.
  3. Enter the names of the people to whom you wish to send the link.
  4. Enter a short message.
  5. Click Send Message and it gets sent through the regular Facebook internal email system.

And that’s it. If you change your mind during this process, and decide you want to share it with your entire network, just click the Post to Profile Instead link in the bottom left-hand corner of the dialog box.
